I'm going to disagree with this...I'm taking over a team with a fair number of holes, and I plan on filling those holes through FA and trades, but to penalize someone for having the cap space to make a large bid is ridiculous...that will only ensure the bottom dwellers remain on the bottom and the teams that were well built over the years stay on top....it's a trade off. I agree with having a penalty for fielding the minimum reqs for a team but don't penalize someone for going hard after a player they covet...if someone pays big for Scherzer, he's on a long term deal so he'd be helping their team for a long time, don't take away the worse off's teams chances of building for the future because you lost out on someone you wanted....

I agree with Zack -- bad teams need to build up their 25 man roster and minor league system by aggressively pursuing some top free agents and by adding some bargain players to fill in until the minor league guys are ready to play or be traded. The only way you could implement a rule forcing teams to pay half of what they bid on a free agent is if it goes into effect 3 or 4 years from now, otherwise the good teams (that already built up through aggressive free agent acquisitions) would have a huge advantage. The 3 or 4 year period before implementation would give everyone time to mold their teams over the same time frame and would make it more possible to level the playing field.

I think it's just venting guys. The main thing is having complete rosters. I started with the Padres 3 years ago, I went through it. Only you know what has to be done to build your specific team. I do believe penalties should be done for dropping players, but I think you should be able to sign all you want. The only reason a team will have so much cap is that they don't have players that have merited decent contracts yet
